Planning Your Orders In an Uncertain Time

Planning Ahead for a Successful Growing Season

It seems like over the past couple of years, the growing industry has faced numerous challenges. From rapidly changing markets to COVID-19 supply issues, continuous supply chain hiccups, inflation, and now tariffs, it almost seems impossible to plan for a normal year. However, Hummert International is here to help every step of the way, ensuring you stay ahead of the ups and downs.

This year has been particularly challenging, with news regarding tariffs changing by the day. As a 90-year-old company, we've seen a lot, but nothing compares to the challenges growers face today. Here's what we've learned so far this year:

Communication Is Key

Work closely with your local supplier to ensure you have everything you need to make informed decisions. Understanding typical lead times for products and identifying unstable circumstances, like manufacturing locations, can help you navigate obstacles more effectively. The more you learn from your supplier, the better equipped you'll be to make strategic decisions.

Have a Short-Term and Long-Term Plan in Place

Identify the key products, supplies, and equipment you need to continue growing this season. Planning ahead can ensure timely delivery and stable pricing. Consider whether the supplies you need are imperative and if their absence could disrupt your operations. Explore new processes to fill any gaps in your operations. Hummert International sells a wide variety of products, but the average lead time for our core products is anywhere from 4 - 6 weeks from a new order. Being 6 to 8 weeks ahead of the game is key to ensuring nothing get’s missed.

Utilize Any Incentives Available from Your Supplier

Take advantage of discounts and bulk purchasing opportunities offered by your supplier. As buying trends have shifted drastically, the increased inventory suppliers had in the past may not be available this year. Programs like the Hummert Early Order Program (coming soon this late Summer/Fall) can help you lock in prices and secure deliveries throughout the year. These programs are designed to help you plan and stay ahead of the curve.

By planning strategically and staying informed, you can navigate the challenges of this season with confidence and optimism. Let's work together to make this growing season a success!
